After She Was Given A Note From A Stranger, It Changed Her Life

We have all watched one too many movies centered around a wonderful love story and although we all enjoy watching them, we often wonder if things like this ever actually happen in real life. In all romantic films, there is the famous “meet-cute,” and if you have watched The Holiday, starring Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black, well then you will know exactly what we are talking about. The “meet-cute” is the moment, where two strangers meet and fall in love. This is a poignant moment in a movie, where from that point, the rest is history. In life, most of us want to fall in love and the idea of meeting your soul mate while you are doing the normal things in your life, such as grocery shopping, can often seem very unrealistic, but what about when it actually happens? Some people do indeed meet the love of their lives while strolling down the street and it was in a brief moment, with a quick smile, that changed this man and woman’s life forever.

Not Her Average Day

To those involved, they day was just like any other, a beautiful sunny Sunday morning and for designer Haline, she was about to set off on her normal weekend routine. Gathering her things, she set out to the supermarket, as she did every Sunday. A part of her usual routine, the 38-year-old grabbed her list of groceries and headed out the door.

Little did she know, her day was going to be completely different from any other before and she had no idea a trip to the supermarket could be so life-changing.

Usual Routine

Not too far from where Haline lived, there was a man who was also waking up and getting ready to head out to do his chores – as he did every Sunday. This guy was a high school teacher named Richard Wheeldon, and just like Heline, he expected to do nothing more than collect his groceries. The 41-year-old lived on his own and was living a great single life, speaking to a newspaper he said that his weekend routine involved getting, “the rudimentary items you need for survival as a bachelor.”

After a nice stroll to the supermarket, he grabbed all of his items and headed to the checkout, taking little notice of what was going on around him.

A Meeting Glance

Heading to the checkout with the smallest queue, Richard stood in line, waiting patiently. As he stood there, only a few people in front of himself, there stood Haline. Of course, at that time neither of them took too much notice of each other, because why would they? As Haline realized she had forgotten to get something from her shopping list, she turned around to see if she would be able to step out from the line and jump back in without having to join the end of the queue.

As she peered over her shoulder, she saw Richard, and as he felt her brief stare, he turned to look at her, and at that moment, their eyes focused on each other. It came as a shock to both of them.

Then Their Eyes Met

Richard was stood right behind Haline in the queue and she wondered if she should ask him if he would let her jump out of the line and back in. Staring up at him, she took a closer look and realized she couldn’t actually ask him as she was rather nervous, and so she just simply offered him a polite smiling and turned back around.

As she stood there, she realized she found Richard very attractive and then laughed to herself. It was very rare for Haline to meet someone and for her first reaction to being “oh gosh!”

Obvious Chemistry

For Wheeldon, he was equally attracted and rather intrigued by Haline’s quaint smile. All of a sudden he was curious, and he found her very charming, even in that brief moment that they shared. Right before she turned back around, Richard managed to flash his smile right back at her, igniting a wave of chemistry between the two. Both stood there, waiting patiently in line, with adrenaline running through them due to the person they were stood right next to.

Would one of them pluck up the courage to say hello, or would they leave the supermarket with nothing more than a smile back and forth?

Nerves Got The Better Of Her

The cashier called Haline forward and she paid for her groceries, feeling too nervous to look behind her again, she shrugged the moment off and began to walk out of the supermarket, to carry on with her Sunday routine.

For Richard, the chemistry between them was too much for him, and being fully aware that this kind of thing didn’t happen to him, he felt as though he needed to act on his impulse, but he had no idea how to.

Instant Attraction

Watching Haline walk towards the door, Richard wondered if he was about to miss out on something exciting. Luckily, Haline also felt a strong pull towards Richard, and could not resist one last peek at him before she left the store. To her delight, as soon as she saw him, all she could see was his huge smile, looking right back at her, almost as if he was waiting for it.

As Richard was now paying, Haline held back and decided to wait for him so they could both say “hello.”

Brief Conversation

The pair both struck up a brief conversation, with both rather nervous it was hard for them to relax and engage in anything more than a little chat. In fact, at that moment, they barely said anything to each other, Richard asked Haline if she lived in the area, and after her reply, he simply recommended another grocery store in the area that she should try.

Speaking about the encounter, Richard explained, “I didn’t really dazzle her with my mighty intellect.”

Could He Walk Away?

It seemed as though their nerves had gotten the better of them and they said their goodbyes and walked away from each. Again, something stuck with Richard and he thought about whether he would be thinking about Haline for the rest of the day and he knew he would.

In that second, he rushed to take a pen from the cashier and scribbled a note on his receipt. Would he catch Haline before she was gone completely?

Taking The Chance

Taking a deep breath, Richard ran after Haline with the receipt in hand, after all, if he did not do it now, then it was possible they would have never have seen each other again. He needed to take his chance. Running after her, he finally caught up with and smiling at her, placed the note into her hand.

It was a spontaneous side that Richard had never seen in himself before, but would it be worth it?

Message On The Receipt

Talking about his act of bravery, Richard said, “I felt sheepish handing it over but figured if it failed, I’d never see this person again and wouldn’t have to admit it to anyone,” but he knew deep down that if it didn’t take the opportunity, then he would probably regret it.

The message was short but sweet and simply read his name, phone number and the words, “Crazy, I know.” Haline, of course, couldn’t resist replying.

Going On A Date

Thinking of a cute way to reply, and wanting to be more inventive than sending a text message, Haline took a piece of paper and wrote, “That was really cute, Richard. I say, ‘Yes,’” taking her phone she then took a picture of the note and sent it to Richard – a message he says he was very much waiting for.

Immediately, he replied and asked Haline out on a date on that very night, but as she had plans, they decided to meet at 12 pm, for a midnight date.

Time Didn’t Matter

For the rest of the day, both Haline and Richard were grinning like Cheshire cats, excited for their date later on that evening. As it was late on a Sunday evening, there weren’t any places open and so the pair decided to take a stroll around a smaller neighborhood nearby.

Very much enjoying each other’s company, they walked side by side, chatting for hours, into the early hours of the following day.

Intense Feeling

They both knew they felt that instant connection to each other and Richard commented, “You never want to skip ahead to the point of being crazy, but there was a genuine sense [that] this person was pretty special. Haline captured the imagination in all sorts of wonderful ways.”

The two were over the moon to have found each other, although a feeling so strong after only just meeting each other, rather frightened them.

Every Moment

It wasn’t long until they were both seeing each other again, and the days turned into weeks. They ended up seeing each other at every chance they had, and their connection only got stronger.

Speaking about them being able to eventually relax around each other, Richard explained, “The next time we met, it was just as lovely, and there were all sorts of connections, laughter, and silliness.”

Strong Bond

Being totally knocked off their feet with the connection they felt for each other, they decided to go with the flow, and if something feels right, then they were going to do it. After just three weeks of meeting, they took a huge leap of faith and moved in with one another. Neither of them had been looking for a relationship but they wanted to honor their feelings. Their relationship went from strength to strength, and they decided to introduce a cat into the family.

Admiring Richard, Haline said about the cat, “Richard would hold him and have deep-and-meaningful [conversations] with him,” she said. “There was something really sweet about it.”

Extending The Family

Even though the timing may have seemed quick to most, they knew what they had and they decided to extend the family further than their cat. Within the year, Haline fell pregnant and later gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, whom they named Amelia.

After getting baby fever, within three years they had the perfect family after welcoming yet another baby, but this time a boy named James.

Everyone Approved

Although the situation may have been fast for some people, Haline’s friends and family were more than happy to offer their blessings, “My sister and her best friend call Richard a dreamboat. Everyone says he’s a real gentleman, which he is.”

For Haline, she had never thought about getting married, but as she was surprising Richard with a birthday party, he had a plan of his own, “I thought I’d out-surprise the girl who was trying to surprise me.”

Happily Ever After

Richard devised a movie worthy proposal, and during his birthday speech, he pointed over to some friends who were holding a “Will you marry me” sign. Shocked with happiness, Haline accepted and later, they both said their “I do’s” and tied the knot, surrounded by their loved ones and of course their two children.

The family continues to live a gorgeous life and thank their lucky stars for that heavenly day, while they were out shopping for their groceries.
