Meghan Markle’s inconvenient moments

We all have awkward moments and blunders but most of us get to have them in the comfort of our own homes, or with a close-knit group of friends. Typically when they occur we get to just laugh them off, maybe they will be caught on camera by an onlooking bystander or make it on to a friend’s personal Instagram story but very rarely do they make worldwide news. If they are, then it must be hilarious.

Unfortunately for public figures like Meghan Markle, she has very specific etiquette rules that she needs to follow at all times, these include how to dress, wave, and act in public overall. If you did not grow up learning all of them, then they will not be ingrained into you as they are saying for the Queen of England. And even she has had some very public blunders. But, as someone who is constantly under public scrutiny Markle’s every move is commented on, and the blunders even more so.

Oops, Wrong Award

When Markle first entered the royal scene as Prince Harry’s girlfriend and then-fiancee she was given some of the lighter royal tasks that would be expected of her as a duchess. One of the most common ones is an award presentation. It is not too difficult, you make a small speech, announce the winner, and present the award.

Easy peasy right? Until it goes wrong that is and you have to entertain the crowd with some one-liners.

And The Winner Is

While she stood on stage in 2018 preparing to give the award to a serviceman or woman at the Endeavour Fund awards event her co-presenter appeared to not actually know who the winner was. She made the most of the situation, grabbed her own notes and announced who the winner was while trying to lighten the mood by telling a few jokes.

The correct winner was eventually announced, but the confusion leading up to the presenting of the award was awkward for everyone to watch, even if it was through no fault of her own. She maintained a giant smile throughout the entire event and did not let it rattle her.

Keep It Together

A few months after the Endeavour debacle Markle was once again in the limelight, and this time for being slightly disrespectful. She and Prince Harry spent Commonwealth Day at various events, but they had to attend one at Westminster Abbey where vocalist Liam Payne of former One Direction fame was tapped to sing.

After he sang a song by John Mayer, he was captured engaging with the audience and his fellow on-stage musicians to commemorate this big day in English history. However, it appeared that the performance may not have been Markle’s and Harry’s cup of tea so to speak.

Caught On Camera

Payne’s performance and audience engagement were actually caught on camera by a number of those in attendance. But one such audience member decided to focus on a few of the Royals and their accompanying guests. In this case, a video of Prince Harry and Markle emerged on the Twitterverse for all to see.

It featured Harry looking at Markle and making a possibly condescending face towards her, forcing her to look away. It seemed as if she was unable to compose herself and control her reaction as she immediately burst out laughing in the grand Abbey causing onlookers to wonder if she was ridiculing the performance.

Who Goes First?

When it comes to walking next to or behind Royals, specifically the Queen of England, there are a variety of different protocols that must be followed, such as never turn your back to her. But, Markle is still very much learning the ropes of this, even though she must have been given a crash course in it. Only a month after being married, one of these protocol gaffes was caught on tape once again.

It involved Markle and the Queen sharing a car and her confusion about what order in which to enter it. The ensuing talk between the two was also recorded.

Social Niceties

The Queen is always supposed to enter the vehicle first, as she is the highest ranking at all times. But, the security detail is shown telling Markle to go before the Queen, causing her some obvious confusion.

The Queen, in true Queen form, told her to go ahead of her, which caused a bit of an outcry amongst the public both for not necessarily being in line with strict protocol rules.

Other Considerations

Etiquette coaches were even approached by the media concerning this event, and they also had a few points to add to the discussion. Namely, that protocol dictates the queen should not sit behind the driver, but across from them on the diagonal.

Therefore, it actually makes sense that Markle enter first since she would need to slide across the backseat leaving the seat behind the driver free for the Queen as she actually prefers to not follow that piece of the protocol.

Dressing Woes

Royal women are always expected to wear high heels, as flat shoes are not allowed, even when they are pregnant. They must always be the epitome of poise and good taste. However, that means that some surfaces are a lot harder to walk on than others in heels, namely grass.

Anyone who has worn them knows that those spiky points are perfect for digging in nice and deep as you walk often causing you to get stuck and fall. You can probably guess what happened to Markle.

Near Miss

Prince Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie got married last year as well, so Markle and Harry had to attend of course. Now, she was expected to wear heels, which she did, lovely white ones to match her blue and white dress. But, as you watch the video her heels and the grass are not exactly a match made in heaven and she almost takes a nosedive as she slips on the grass.

Harry managed to keep her upright with the help of a firm grasp on her hand, but it was a close one.

Keep It Conservative

There are certain styles of dress that the Royals are not permitted to wear because they show too much skin, which is something you cannot do once you are an official member of the family. Unfortunately for Markle, she had the Royal version of a Janet Jackson moment.

Although MUCH less revealing, still by no means acceptable for a very public function. It was not helped by the fact that people thought the dark color of her dress was too somber for the occasion.

She’s Come Undone

Markle and Harry were at another wedding, which she decided to wear a very dark dress for, the style of the dress featured buttons up the front that held it together.

Well, the top button must have not been sewn on very well because it popped off during the course of the event which allowed a peek of black lace from her underthings to show. As a Royal, this was unacceptable.

Can’t Keep Her Hands To Herself

In a further breach of etiquette, Markle tried to hold Harry’s hand during an event called the Young Leaders Reception. This event had the Queen in attendance, which meant that the protocol had to be strictly followed, and that means no public displays of affection.

This includes hand holding. As anyone who has seen Markle and Harry together knows, they are almost inseparable and are always holding hands. So, when Markle instinctively grabbed for Harry’s hand he pulled away.

Hands Off

Harry knows the protocol to a key, so he would not let Markle hold his hand in front of the Queen who is a firm believer in etiquette. He most likely wanted to keep the Queen happy but it made Markle look like she was fumbling around and her husband wanted nothing to do with her

It appears that it was awkward for all parties involved, but she simply needs to remember the rules and all will be well.

What Is Too Much PDA?

Markle is known for constantly needing to be in close proximity to Harry, and needing a reassuring touch here and there but the public feels that maybe they are a little bit too touchy.

She was spotted back in October of 2018 rubbing Harry’s back as he greeted the public and the press had a field day with.

Ignored

Another picture surfaced recently of Markle walking with her in-laws and appearing to be saying something to Prince William, while he subsequently ignored her. In fact, it looked like he was more interested in his scarf than her. But, critics have hypothesized that she may have been talking to Kate.

Or that William simply wanted to stay away from any kind of exchange in which he appeared emotional to the press who was keeping a keen eye on the going on.

Insult Or Compliment?

While Markle is very pregnant at the moment, on a visit to one of the philanthropic organizations that she supports, a volunteer informed her that she was a “fat lady.” Markle in good humor accepted it as a compliment rather an insult, as culturally to the woman who said it, she meant Meghan was very far into her pregnancy.

If she had shown she was visibly offended things could have gone poorly for her in the media so she took it in good stride. Markle appears to be coming into her own, and her social blunders are becoming less and less!
